After-School Attendance Recovery

AHPS recognizes that good attendance is essential to academic success. Too many students are at risk academically because they are chronically absent. Chronic absence is described as missing 10 percent of the school year—or about 18 days— for any reason. Only 10 parent notes or messages for illness or family emergencies are allowed for excused absences; any note or call received thereafter is considered an unexcused absence.

Callaghan Elementary will begin having an After-School Attendance Recovery Program that has been initiated by Alleghany Highlands Public Schools in which any elementary student who has experienced an excessive number of absences can stay after school until 4:30. During that time, direct or online instruction and activities will be provided that will allow students to catch up and close any learning gaps that have been caused by excessive absences.

For every two days that a student participates in after school recovery, one absence will be expunged from their record.

Dates for after-school recovery are:

March 5, 14, 19, 21, 26

April 4, 9, 11, 16, 18, 23, 25, 30

Please contact the school if you have any questions or if you would like your child to participate.
